New legislation is now in place for replacement CATs which states "it will be illegal to supply or install a replacement catalytic converter that is NOT Type Approved, for a vehicle first used after January 2001". It is expected the new legislation will take effect in June 2009, so ensure if you buy an aftermarket CAT that it is Type Approved (TA) if your vehicle was first used (we assume registered) after January 2001.
